History of Astrology

Human beings, by nature, have always been very curious creatures. They have the innate urge to know and decipher and unravel all the mysteries of the universe in the quest to understand the functioning of the Supreme Power. Everything on this planet Earth, has been subjected to close scrutiny, inspection and investigation but there have always been certain elements which have been beyond the realm of human comprehension, like the working of the stars and the planets in the sky above. Man’s obsession with understanding of the working of the sky led to the development of three bodies of science- astronomy, astrology and calendar. While astronomy is a dedicated Science that unravels the mysteries of the stars and the planets, astrology is a pseudo-science which studies in detail the impact of the movement and placing of the stars and planets on human fate, destiny and personality, the premise being that since the sky is the abode of Gods, people born under the effect of certain celestial bodies, must necessarily reflect that influence.

Origin: It is a 5000-year-old science, which has its roots in ancient Babylon in Greece in the 2nd century B.C. The Babylonians studied certain celestial omens and rooted them in confluence with certain events forecasted in future. The method of auguring eclipses, catastrophic floods and other disasters on the basis of such phenomenon soon spread across India, China, Greece and the Middle East who already had a belief that the stars, were indisputably linked to have a role to play in human destiny. The Babylonian Astrology was soon followed by entire Egypt and once Alexander set his base over there, the Greeks also lapped it up, where it merged with Hellenic Astronomy.

Bearing in India: In India, Sage Parashara is believed to be the founder of Vedic Astrology and linked the Hindu Astrology to a predictive system used in meteorology. The basis of astrological processes which is in vogue today can be attributed to the genius of ancient Rishis like Parsahara, Varaha Mihira, Garga, Jaimini and others. The 5th Century C.E is referred to as the ‘Classical Age of Astronomy’ in India and the two were closely linked where events noted in one subject finds it bearings in another. Even the ancient Mahabharata lend credence to the practice of astrology, being in vogue.

Apart from the basic root school of astrology which was the Parashara School, two eminent scholars of notable repute who further impacted this movement in India were Satyacarya and Varaha Mihira. Their detailed and exhaustive study on the subjects and the publication of books like ‘Jataka Parijata’ and ‘Sarvartha Chintamani’ provided valuable inputs on the subject.

Modern Status: Today apart from the Ancient practice of Vedic Astrology, astrologers also base their prediction on Chinese, Mayan (based on the teachings of Maya, who was the most famous astronomer of the pre-Columbian world) and Western Astrology (developed by Ptolemy in the 2nd century A.D). Though from 1700s, Western Astrology lost their credence as pure Science, yet the fact remains that whenever humans would look for ways to decode the life and its sequence, their eyes would always fall on the sky to make sense of the chaos and bring a semblance of some order. Love Vashikaran Specialists often make use of this impactful Science to base their findings.

It is not surprising that Astrology retains its position as a legitimate Science in modern India and remains an important aspect of Hindu belief in contemporary times. Famous Astrologers in India are much revered and have a potent role to play in the foretelling of future events in the course of life.
